About us

Ties to Norway is where Norwegian heritage meets timeless elegance.

It is the culmination of a respect for tradition combined with a passion for creativity, and stems from a belief in the importance of strengthening the bonds between people and places, for a more connected and inclusive society.

Over the past year, we have been working hard to create the perfect accessory for people who want to celebrate their connection to Norway with a subtle gesture of appreciation: a bunad-inspired tie.

Whether you were born in Norway or somewhere further afield, our ties are made for you.

Our story

After moving to Norway from the UK in 2016 with my Norwegian wife, Freya, the idea for Ties to Norway began because I was tired of wearing the same old red tie to celebrate the 17th of May each year. I wanted a better way to show my appreciation for the day and my connection to Freya and her family.

I wouldn't have felt comfortable buying and wearing a bunad myself, so I started looking for the next best thing:
a tie matching the Øst-Telemark bunad.

I soon discovered that 'bunad ties' did exist, but they weren't exactly what I had hoped for in terms of fabrics, designs, and prices. I realised that if I really wanted one, I was going to have to make it myself!

Over the years, I met more and more people in a similar situation to me, who also wanted to feel more connected and related to the idea of having something special to wear on occasions like the 17th of May, weddings, confirmations, Julebord, og så videre...

So, in February 2024, I decided I had to do something about it, and Ties to Norway was born!

Designed with care in Norway

Our ties are inspired by the traditional bunad patterns from various regions across Norway and we have taken great care to ensure that each tie retains the essence of the bunad it relates to.

The designs are printed onto high-quality 100% silk fabric to ensure a classic look and feel that goes with any suit, and are produced by a leading British tie manufacturer with more than 40 years of experience.

Our Mission

Ties to Norway's mission is to make it more inclusive for people to wear the colours and patterns of the bunad that mean something to them, and to help people feel a deeper bond and sense of belonging.
